Speed Up Your Slow PC!

Do you want to speed up your slowing pc? Here’s another tutorial on how to do it.
  • To speed up boot up or Start-up:
Click Start > then click Run > type: msconfig > click OK
System Configuration Window will open
Click on the Startup tab > uncheck or disable all except for your anti-virus > click apply then reboot your pc
  • Run a complete system scan using your anti-virus, but before you do so, make sure that your anti-virus is updated.
  • Do not install two anti-vruses at the same time, aside from the result of slowing down your pc, your anti-virus will not function effectively.
  • Defrag your hard-disk.
Over time, new files get written to your hard disk and you delete the old ones. Sometimes the new data doesn’t quite fit in the gaps and some files get written in multiple areas on the hard disk and because the hard drive has to scan multiple parts of the the disk to read a fragmented file, it can slow down the operation of the computer.
Defragmentation can optimize the hard disk, which places similar files in similar location. Contiguous files are read more efficiently by the hard drive and therefore lead to faster data access.
  • Use of other utilities or applications.
I am using Advance System Care.  I availed the professional version but you can download a free version for a start. It is easy to use.  It cleans, configures and optimizes your pc.
The program’s Quick Care option includes the ability to clean your Registry, perform a rudimentary malware scan, fix and remove broken shortcuts, delete junk files, and erase browsing tracks.  Scan time will vary depending on which options you choose, which can fix up to 10 problems simultaneously.
CCleaner is a freeware system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool. It removes unused files from your system – allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. Additionally it contains a fully featured registry cleaner. But the best part is that it’s fast (normally taking less than a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware!
You may choose among the two, in my case I am using them alternately.
  • Windows Disk Clean Up tool
In case you do not want to use the first two utilities, you can use the Windows disk clean up tool. It will help you free up space on your hard disk to improve the performance of your computer.
You can find the Disk Clean Up tool by clicking Start > go to All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup
  • Check on your disk files. Delete files that you no longer need, or back it up in another external hard disk or burn a copy of it.  Hard disks nearly full will slow down your pc as well.

For more inspiration, sometimes I think about taking ongoing computer classes to stay sharp. My eldest son is a graduate of BS Information Technology and he really enjoys his job. With my youngest son, I encourage him to earn a computer science major, since technology is at the heart of all employment. My husband, children and I  are computer users, definitely we enjoy using  a well-maintained pc, especially if it is not slow.
Happy Computing!

Ways on How to Block Sites

We as parents are very much concerned about our kid’s safety online.  Primarily, we are not after our children’s time wasting in the internet but on what activities they are engaged and what they are doing in these sites.  Possibilities of they might be interacting already with complete strangers who are asking for our personal information that would risk not only the family’s security but might exploit our kids as well.  Most viruses are acquired in visiting these harmful sites too.  So it is our duty to educate our children about the dangers of sharing private and personal information online. Furthermore, explaining them the reason of blocking certain sites for them not to be able to outsmart us.  Kids also have their know-how in unblocking certain sites they want to view.  In my case I am using the Open DNS in my home network, making sure they do not know my password.
We cannot always have an eye on them to monitor their activities in the computer especially on the internet, so to make sure of their safety, we need to block and restrict certain websites which we think might be harmful.
Website Filtering is used to allow or deny computers on your network from accessing specific web sites by keywords or specific Domain Names.
There are a number of ways to block porn sites, or any other website that you would like to prevent from showing up in your browser.
    1. Use Open DNS
    2. Use K9, Net Nanny, Norton Internet Security or Naomi internet filter or other website  blocking softwares that you may purchase online.
    3. Use manual filtering. This is one way of blocking sites that can be done without the use of any software.  Just follow the instructions below:

Step 1: Click the Start button and select Run. Now type the following text in that Run box:
notepad c:WINDOWSsystem32driversetchosts
Step 2: A new notepad window will prompt on your screen containing some cryptic information. Go to the last line of the file, hit the enter key and type the following:
Note:  you may type and include all the websites you want to be blocked in your network.
Step 3: Save the file and exit. You are now done! None of the above sites will now open on your computer.  You may delete, edit and add sites to be blocked in the future.
    4.  Use  BlockSite add on, if you are using the Fire Fox browser
    5. Router  “Turn Website Filtering ON and ALLOW computers access to ONLY¨ and then enter in the domains you want your children to have access to.

Let us keep our family safe from these online predators!

How To Show Hidden Files and Folders

This is a tutorial on how to show the hidden files and folders of the Drive C of your computer system.  In my experience it is very useful and important that these files and folders are shown in order to easily detect unwanted files mingling with them.  Most viruses hide and mutate too.

These hidden files and folders are essential components of your system, so be very careful not to alter or delete it, or else an error will occur the next time you boot up your personal computer.

The following are the steps on how to Show Hidden Files and Folders:

Open My Computer > click Tools > click Folder Options > click View

Tick on show Hidden Files and Folders
Uncheck the  next two  Hide settings
Then click OK
Now, you will see this when you open your Drive C. The files and folders in the boxes are the hidden files and folders of your system.
