Family Pictures: Cute Ideas for a Winter Shoot

Whether you need photos for next year’s holiday cards, or you suddenly realized that Mom hasn’t been in any family photos in the last five years, a winter photo shoot holds plenty of possibilities. Some families shy away from family pictures this time of year since the weather is cold, and the days are shorter, but you can make your family photos truly special by incorporating one or more of these fun-filled winter ideas.

Plaid is Rad
Nothing says winter fun more than bold, plaid prints, so don’t be afraid to incorporate some gorgeous plaid into your photo shoot. These patterns will especially pop against the white backdrop of a snowy day.
Of course, this doesn’t mean you need to dress your family members head to toe in plaid. Instead, use plaid scarves, or take a photo with you all snuggled together under a huge plaid blanket.

Let It Snow

It might be chilly outside, but that doesn’t mean that you’re stuck taking pictures indoors. In fact, snow makes an exceptional background for family pictures. Since the light can be harsh when it’s reflected off the white snow, schedule your photo shoot for early in the morning, or the hour before sunset. These times of day offer softer light.

Stay Candid
You might be surprised to find out that the best pictures aren’t always perfectly posed in a studio. Instead, some of the photos you’ll love the most are those that candidly express that love that you and your family members share.
If you want to get some candid photos, choose a photographer that specializes in a photojournalistic style. The photographer can capture your family participating in your favorite winter activities. Schedule a photo shoot to take place while you are decorating the tree, sledding on a snowy day or just enjoying a casual day at home by the fireplace.

Prepare Carefully
Regardless of where you choose to have your photo shoot, you want your family members to look their best. If you’re not happy with the way you look, this discomfort can shine through in your photos.
Choose outfits that are both flattering and comfortable, and remember that you just need to be coordinated, not perfectly matched. If you’d like to improve your smile, schedule a tooth whitening session with your dentist before the big day. And make sure everyone’s had their hair cut, eyebrows waxed, tooth extraction in Utah, or their wisdom teeth in Utah done, so no one has puffy cheeks or a bad hair day on your planned date.

When you take the time to prepare for your photo shoot and take a few risks, you’ll be rewarded with family photos that you’ll treasure forever.
