How To Disable Autoplay

This is a tutorial on how you will be able to disable the autoplay feature in your computer system.  Disabling autoplay will greatly help in minimizing the autorun viruses to get into your computer system, most especially in the registry portion.

For Windows XP

Go to Start Menu > click run > type: gpedit.msc > click ok

Group Policy Window will open.  Click on Administrative Templates as shown below then click System.  



At the right pane, scroll down, then double click Turn Off AutoPlay

Under Turn Off AutoPlay Properties, tick on “Enabled” and select “All Drives”

Click Apply and you’re done!


For Windows 7

Go to Start Menu > click run > type: gpedit.msc > click ok

Local Group Policy Editor will open, click Administrative Templates


Under Administrative Templates click Windows Components

Next, under Windows Components click Autoplay Policies

On the right hand panel, double click Turn Off AutoPlay
Turn Off Auto Play window will open


Tick on “Enabled” then choose “ All drives” in the option then click OK.

Voila! You can disable Autoplay feature by simply following the step by step instructions given above.

  1. I'm always doing this sis, but when it comes to windows 7 i just don't have any idea, thanks for this since I became a known "technician" here in my place and window 7 is what they get when they got there pc, i can now turn off there autoplay which is always a culprit for nasty

  2. I needed also for Vista, and I used Autoplay Disabler Pro ( ). I don't know how it happened in my windows 7, but this way showed in post didn't worked for me to stop autorun viruses! Anyway, now I solved the problem with application I mentioned.
