Deep down, we’ve all got a little geek inside of us. Some of us are more attuned to it than others, but nobody should be afraid to unleash that geeky side. After all, being comfortable and free will allow you to gain more fun out of life.

You don’t have to be a complete nerd to enjoy some geeky activities. Here are four brilliant activities that we can all enjoy unleashing our inner geek. Whether you do it alone or with others doesn’t matter. The key is that you have fun.

Enjoy.

Vlogging

Being geeky and being cool aren’t mutually exclusive ideas. Modern tech illustrates this perfectly. Gadgets are at the heart of everything we do as a society. One of the most enjoyable ways to make the most of this is to start vlogging.

Vlogging is essentially online broadcasting where you will make videos about your favourite topics. You may wish to talk about your favourite musicians, sports stars or films. Alternatively, you may want to pick a niche idea. Either way, the key is to create killer content. You can find out how to do this at Vlog Nation.

It’s certainly a little geeky, but it’s also pretty cool. Besides, it could make you money too.

Hiking

A geek doesn’t have to be locked away in their bedroom on a 24/7 basis. However, they do gain enjoyment from activities that a lot of other people would baulk at.

Hiking is a fantastic example. Where others will enjoy playing team sports, the geeks amongst us would prefer to walk through challenging terrains. Rather than scoring goals, our reward is those breathtaking sceneries. To take things to a new level, you should take you camera with you too.

The great thing about this hobby is that every trek is a new adventure.

Cosplay

Nowadays, most people admit to being lovers of superheroes. For the majority, though, this means watching films and maybe playing video games. For a truly geek-friendly adventure, you should try cosplay.

Dressing up and acting out adventures is a great way to live out your fantasies. Moreover, many cosplayers find that it’s the perfect outlet to meet new people too. The Yaya Han collection has some awesome designs, which can take the fantasy to another level entirely.

Moreover, it doubles up as the ideal fancy dress costume for any future parties too.

Collecting

Collecting stamps, figures and other commodities is nothing new. But it’s still as geek-friendly as ever and is the perfect hobby that can also be enjoyed as a family.

With thanks to the internet, you can now find out vast information about the most valuable coins and other items in existence. You can also source fantastic storage facilities to keep your collectibles in pristine condition.

Many modern geeks enjoy collecting limited edition toys and keeping them in their boxes. You might not see any joy from using those items, but knowing that you have them can provide a great sense of satisfaction. What more could you want from a geek-friendly hobby?

Beginners’ Guide: How to Drive an ATV

Whether you refer to them as a ‘quad bike’ or ‘an ATV’, there’s no doubt that riding one is a great way to traverse off-road terrain and enjoy barrels of four-wheeled fun in the process. For those that have limited experience, or even those who have never driven an ATV before, these considerations will ensure you can drive the right model with confidence and safety. Before hitting the trails, read on to learn how a few basic tips will allow you to get the most out of any ATV riding experience.

Choose the Right ATV

If you’re new to the world of all-terrain vehicles, a model that falls withinthe sports/utility ATV range will likely be the right model for starting out. These models balance power with size, and are used more for recreation rather than competitive or work-related purposes. It may be also worth seeking professional advice from suppliers such as JSW Powersports so you can choose an ATV based on your skill level, what the ATV will be used for, who will ride it, and what performance is needed.

Tips for Driving an ATV for the first time

One of the biggest things to remember when driving on unsealed trails and gravel roads on an ATV is know how to smoothly navigate ruts in the road. To do this safely, firstly it’s important to slow down. You can either ride through the rut or choose to straddle either side. To ride through a rut, put both two left or right wheels on the edge of the rut and follow its path until the end.If you straddle the rut, have each set of wheels on either side, and follow its path to the end by committing to keep wheels away from the edges of the rut until you’ve reached the end.

Also before riding for the first time, make sure you know the location of the throttle, brakes, pedals and clutch (if applicable.) Some models may have a twist throttle similar to a motorbike. Start slowly to get used to the controls and stick to a smooth surface. Practice the basics first, including starting, stopping and turning.

Safety While Operating an ATV

ATVs are generally safe when operated under the right conditions and instructions. Like regular driving, speed is a major factor in unsafe situations, including collisions and tip overs. The right posture means having your head up, shoulders relaxed, elbows bent and hands on the handlebars; this will help you to respond quickly if necessary. When turning, lean your body forward, shifting your weight towards the inside of the turn.

As well as wearing the right safety equipment including a helmet, boots and goggles, it’s important to plan an ATV expedition by packing the right equipment. This includes a spare container of petrol, water, snacks and a jacket in case of a breakdown. A compass and map will also serve you well if your mobile phone battery dies.

What other information is essential for first-time or beginner ATV drivers to know? Share your tips below. Happy riding!

Anime Dolls: Understanding Your Nendoroid Collection

Toy figurine collection is a popular hobby of today’s youth. Back then, boys and girls are happy to get a matchbox car or a Barbie doll but today, toy figures are no longer limited to cars and dolls. Japanese anime series has a direct influence in the growing popularity of this hobby. You can now find teens – young boys and girls alike seriously growing their collection of Figmas, Pettanko and of course the Nendoroid collection. These anime or magna dolls are not the as common as the usual PVC dolls and statues. They have unique designs that make them highly collectable.

 nendoroid

My youngest son is a collector of Nendoroids. These figures are quite pricey and in order for him to buy his chibis, he sets aside a portion of his daily school monetary allowance. But because he is doing well in his studies, we buy him a set as his reward on a quarterly basis that is right after we see his report card.

What exactly are Nendoroids? Basically, it came from the Japanese word “nendo” pertaining to clay or plasticine and as the name suggest, they are small dolls made of plastic. Nendoroid dolls are about four inches tall and they are known for their ‘chibi’ or deformed format meaning, the doll’s head is about one-third of its height!

Nendoroids are well loved and liked because they are adorable doll figures and they come with plenty of changeable pieces. The faces can be changed to show different expressions and the limbs can also be replaced for change in character. You won’t be surprised to find garments that can make your dolls look exactly like the manga or anime character that they are.

The First Timer’s Guide to Hiking

If you’re feeling pretty out of shape, or just want to embark on a journey to a healthier life, one way you can do this is through hiking. You can make your hikes as easy or as hard as you like; go on a serious trek, or a take a fun stroll. Hiking is the perfect way to prepare your body for strenuous activity, so it’s a great starter exercise. Here’s the first timer’s guide to hiking to help you:

1. How long do you have to hike?

Ideally, you want trails that you are able to complete in less than a day to start off with. This means you won’t need to take an extra change of clothes, pack a tent, or anything else that could complicate things. You’ll need to select a hike dependant on the time you have – is it a whole Saturday, or just a couple of hours on a Thursday? Start off small and you’ll be able to climb island peak before you know it!

2. Are you hiking alone, or with a group?

Hiking on your own, is likened by some to meditation. It can be very therapeutic! However, you need to be careful as hiking by yourself can be more dangerous, depending on where you’re going. Hiking is a great way to bond, so ask a friend or a group of friends to join you!

If you must go hiking alone, make sure you tell somebody where you’re going and what time you think you’ll be home. Did you ever see the film 127 hours? It’s enough to put anybody off hiking alone! Make sure you tell somebody you trust the appropriate details so that they can contact the authorities if you don’t return.

3. What do you plan on wearing?

It’s very important that you’re comfortable for your hike. You can either wear proper hiking boots (these can be uncomfortable) or trainers. It’s totally up to you! You’ll need to try to find some socks that won’t make your feet sweaty and uncomfortable, or give you blisters. Pants are a must (we hope you’d wear them anyway), as well as comfortable trousers. Dress depending on the weather too! Hats, wind jackets, and waterproofs are also acceptable.

 4. What are you going to pack?

Even if you’re just going on a beginners hike, there are a few things you’ll need to take with you.

  • A small backpack.
  • A charged mobile phone. Preferably a smartphone so you can use some of the great hiking apps and listen to a playlist!
  • A camera.
  • A book or kindle (try finding a beautiful location and getting lost in a book for a few hours!).
  • Sunscreen to protect yourself from the harsh rays.
  • Bug spray to avoid bites.
  • A first aid kit just incase.
  • Sunglasses.
  • Food to keep your energised.

So, now you should be ready to go on your first hike! Why not track your hike, using an iPhone app or buy investing in a Nike Fuel band to keep you motivated? Make a great playlist, take plenty of water and some nuts to snack on, and you’re ready to go!
