Commuting Made Easy: 5 Reasons a Fold-Away Bike is the Perfect Choice for Your Commuting Needs

Some people avoid thinking about getting a fold-away bike based on how it looks. But these bikes are simply incredible: not only can they look cool if you get the right model, they’re also incredibly lightweight and you can take them with you anywhere you like and fold them together when you no longer need them. So, what are the top 5 reasons why a fold-away bike is the answer for all your commuting needs?

  1. Portability

Although this is the obvious benefit, it simply cannot be overstated. By taking your bike with you, you won’t ever have to worry about it being stolen while you’re not looking at it. This is such a stress relief it will truly make all the difference in your life and put your worries to rest. In fact, there are many great bikes for commute, and most of them will fit into your backpack with ease.

  1. Low-maintenance

Fold-away bikes require much less maintenance than normal bikes. Of course, you’re still going to need to make sure there is enough air in your tires, the chain is oiled and that the lights are charged, but that’s about it. No renting out parking spots, no gas, no insurance, and no hassle whatsoever. In case you need to get it repaired for any reason, you will quickly find that the repair costs are close to zero.

  1. Health-benefits

Riding a fold-away bike has the same kind of health benefits as riding a regular bike. It burns away excess fat, makes you fitter, it’s good for your coronary system and much more. Why not travel to work using a fold-away bike rather than driving there or relying on public transport? You’ll also be subjected to much less air pollution this way, even during a rush hour.

  1. Ease of use

While true that you’re going to need a little bit of practice to get used to it, the truth is, this is not going to take that much time either. In fact, most people seem to grasp the concept within an hour or less. Learning how to properly fold and unfold them will probably take much more time (and even that is rather negligible). Here’s a tip if you’re just starting out: don’t try to do it in a place that is too crowded to avoid feeling embarrassed.

  1. Uniqueness

Nothing makes for a better conversation starter than a fold-away bike due to how unique they look. Not even a puppy. Just by looking at what you’re carrying around, people will look at you as the unique individual you are, and ask themselves why they’ve never thought about getting a fold-away bike themselves. It’s not uncommon to see people approaching fold-away bike owners and asking them questions, so if you consider yourself an extroverted person, this is a huge plus.

Fold-away bikes are one of the best commuting inventions of the present times. Different models have different perks, so it’s up to you to choose the one you like best. Are you fired up to change your commuting life forever and never look back?

5 Easy Bike Maintenance Tips

Riding a bike is good for health or weight loss. However, a bike can only serve this purpose if it is maintained well. A bike that is maintained works smoothly, lasts longer and is less prone to accidents.

It is uncommon to find people who do not know how to maintain their bikes in the right manner. Here are the top five tips you need to consider.

Keep the Tires Inflated

The pressure of the tires has a significant impact on the quality of a bike. A low tire pressure means that you have to work harder on the pedals to keep the right speed than tires with high pressure. Tires with low pressure are also more susceptible to flats than those that are well inflated.

You need to invest in a quality floor pump with a gauge to help keep the pressures of the tires at suitable levels. The rear tire should have more pressure since it handles most of the weight. You should check the pressure of the tires at least once in two weeks.

In case you are changing a tire, run your fingers along the inside of the rim to check for foreign objects. Foreign objects such as gravel or pieces of glass can pinch the tire against the rim and cause a flat. Also, check the new tube to make sure it is not caught between the tire and the rim.

Adjust the Brakes Correctly

You want to make sure your brakes respond correctly when you need them. They can only perform correctly if you adjust and repair them.

You first have to test the performance of your brakes by pressing the brake levers while the bike is moving. If you pull the lever until it touches the handlebar, then your brakes need some adjustments.

You can adjust the brakes using the barrel in the brake lever. Making the screw in the barrel tight moves the brake pads closer to the rim. You may also unscrew the bolt holding the wire and straighten or tighten the wire before screwing the bolt back.

It is also imperative you keep the pads and all components of the braking system free from dirt. You can use alcohol-based products for cleaning.

Clean Your Bike Regularly

A clean bike is easier to ride than one with mud and dirt everywhere. It also becomes easier to spot a problem and deal with it without too much trouble if your bike is clean. For instance, fixing a flat tire is often difficult when the bike is dirty because you cannot locate the point of puncture.

All you need to clean your bike is a bucket of warm water, detergent that cuts grease, a few sponges and at least two brushes. Make sure you wet the entire bike to loosen any mud or grime before you use the brush. This way, you won’t scratch the paint, which is what normally happens when you begin scratching with a brush before wetting the whole surface.

Make sure every part of the bike is clean, including the brake pads and rims. It is also a good idea to inspect the bike for any faults as you clean.

Keep the Drivetrain Lubricated

A bike that produces a rattling and squeaking sound is embarrassing and annoying, especially when you are riding in a group. You can save yourself from the embarrassment by cleaning and greasing your drivetrain regularly. The squeaking sound is produced when the metals rub against each other due to insufficient grease.

It is also not cheap to replace the worn out parts, so make sure you regularly clean and grease the drivetrain to save some money. You will require some rags, bike oil and de-greasers. You may also require a toothbrush and screwdriver to access the inner parts of the chains and wheels.

Make Sure the Bolts and Nuts are Tight

Make sure all the screws, bolts and nuts in the bike are where they should be by checking if they are loose. Screws and bolts often come off as a result of the constant vibration when you are riding. Some bolts, especially those holding the head tube and handlebars, can cause serious accidents when they come off.

Make sure you don’t tighten the bolts too much. Some bolts have the torque limit written on them. You can buy a bike multi-tool that applies only a specified amount of torque.

I'm not a geek...

Deep down, we’ve all got a little geek inside of us. Some of us are more attuned to it than others, but nobody should be afraid to unleash that geeky side. After all, being comfortable and free will allow you to gain more fun out of life.

You don’t have to be a complete nerd to enjoy some geeky activities. Here are four brilliant activities that we can all enjoy unleashing our inner geek. Whether you do it alone or with others doesn’t matter. The key is that you have fun.

Being geeky and being cool aren’t mutually exclusive ideas. Modern tech illustrates this perfectly. Gadgets are at the heart of everything we do as a society. One of the most enjoyable ways to make the most of this is to start vlogging.

Vlogging is essentially online broadcasting where you will make videos about your favourite topics. You may wish to talk about your favourite musicians, sports stars or films. Alternatively, you may want to pick a niche idea. Either way, the key is to create killer content. You can find out how to do this at Vlog Nation.

It’s certainly a little geeky, but it’s also pretty cool. Besides, it could make you money too.

A geek doesn’t have to be locked away in their bedroom on a 24/7 basis. However, they do gain enjoyment from activities that a lot of other people would baulk at.

Hiking is a fantastic example. Where others will enjoy playing team sports, the geeks amongst us would prefer to walk through challenging terrains. Rather than scoring goals, our reward is those breathtaking sceneries. To take things to a new level, you should take you camera with you too.

The great thing about this hobby is that every trek is a new adventure.

Nowadays, most people admit to being lovers of superheroes. For the majority, though, this means watching films and maybe playing video games. For a truly geek-friendly adventure, you should try cosplay.

Dressing up and acting out adventures is a great way to live out your fantasies. Moreover, many cosplayers find that it’s the perfect outlet to meet new people too. The Yaya Han collection has some awesome designs, which can take the fantasy to another level entirely.

Moreover, it doubles up as the ideal fancy dress costume for any future parties too.

Collecting stamps, figures and other commodities is nothing new. But it’s still as geek-friendly as ever and is the perfect hobby that can also be enjoyed as a family.

With thanks to the internet, you can now find out vast information about the most valuable coins and other items in existence. You can also source fantastic storage facilities to keep your collectibles in pristine condition.

Many modern geeks enjoy collecting limited edition toys and keeping them in their boxes. You might not see any joy from using those items, but knowing that you have them can provide a great sense of satisfaction. What more could you want from a geek-friendly hobby?

Beginners’ Guide: How to Drive an ATV

Whether you refer to them as a ‘quad bike’ or ‘an ATV’, there’s no doubt that riding one is a great way to traverse off-road terrain and enjoy barrels of four-wheeled fun in the process. For those that have limited experience, or even those who have never driven an ATV before, these considerations will ensure you can drive the right model with confidence and safety. Before hitting the trails, read on to learn how a few basic tips will allow you to get the most out of any ATV riding experience.

Choose the Right ATV

If you’re new to the world of all-terrain vehicles, a model that falls withinthe sports/utility ATV range will likely be the right model for starting out. These models balance power with size, and are used more for recreation rather than competitive or work-related purposes. It may be also worth seeking professional advice from suppliers such as JSW Powersports so you can choose an ATV based on your skill level, what the ATV will be used for, who will ride it, and what performance is needed.

Tips for Driving an ATV for the first time

One of the biggest things to remember when driving on unsealed trails and gravel roads on an ATV is know how to smoothly navigate ruts in the road. To do this safely, firstly it’s important to slow down. You can either ride through the rut or choose to straddle either side. To ride through a rut, put both two left or right wheels on the edge of the rut and follow its path until the end.If you straddle the rut, have each set of wheels on either side, and follow its path to the end by committing to keep wheels away from the edges of the rut until you’ve reached the end.

Also before riding for the first time, make sure you know the location of the throttle, brakes, pedals and clutch (if applicable.) Some models may have a twist throttle similar to a motorbike. Start slowly to get used to the controls and stick to a smooth surface. Practice the basics first, including starting, stopping and turning.

Safety While Operating an ATV

ATVs are generally safe when operated under the right conditions and instructions. Like regular driving, speed is a major factor in unsafe situations, including collisions and tip overs. The right posture means having your head up, shoulders relaxed, elbows bent and hands on the handlebars; this will help you to respond quickly if necessary. When turning, lean your body forward, shifting your weight towards the inside of the turn.

As well as wearing the right safety equipment including a helmet, boots and goggles, it’s important to plan an ATV expedition by packing the right equipment. This includes a spare container of petrol, water, snacks and a jacket in case of a breakdown. A compass and map will also serve you well if your mobile phone battery dies.
